🌈 Healthy Eating & Wellbeing Workshop at Herne Hill School

Last week, Kidz4 delivered a bespoke Healthy Eating & Wellbeing Workshop for children from Nursery through to Year 2 at Herne Hill School in Brixton. Designed specifically for their Pre-Prep cohort, the session combined early nutrition education, movement and breathwork to help children understand how healthy choices support both body and mind.

For young children, wellbeing is best understood when it is experienced physically. Rather than presenting information passively, we brought the concept of “eating the rainbow” to life through movement.

Children stretched tall in Banana Pose, balanced in Broccoli Balance, twisted through Corn Curls and stood confidently in Asparagus Posture. Each movement linked back to a simple, age-appropriate explanation of how different coloured fruits and vegetables support different parts of the body — from heart health to brain function and energy levels.

By the end of the workshop, children as young as three were confidently explaining that water helps their brains “think better” and that some foods give them “longer energy.” These early connections between nutrition and how they feel are foundational for building lifelong habits.

Breathwork, Regulation & Classroom Impact

In our workshops we use props to keep children engaged.

Alongside movement, the workshop introduced a simple Kidz4 breathing technique designed for early years learners:

“Smell the soup… blow to cool it.”

This playful visual cue helps children slow their breathing and regulate their nervous system. The shift in the room was noticeable. Energy softened. Focus increased.

Following the session, the Head of PE commented that the children left “noticeably calm,” while another teacher shared that it was “the most engaged” he had seen that particular group.

One member of staff was so inspired by the breathing method that she plans to integrate it into her daily classroom routine — extending the impact well beyond the workshop itself.

A Personal Approach to Early Education

We are intentional with our Curriculum.

As a mother, I care deeply about the quality of early education around food and wellbeing. Healthy eating at this age is not about restriction or rigid rules; it is about awareness, confidence and understanding how choices affect mood, concentration and energy.

The intention behind this workshop was not simply for children to hear that “fruit is good for you,” but to understand how nutrition, hydration and posture influence how they feel in their own bodies.

Those foundations matter enormously in the early years.

Inclusive by Design

The workshop was carefully adapted to ensure every child could participate meaningfully. For children with sensory needs, soft fruit and vegetable sensory toys were offered to balance gently on their tummies during breathwork, providing grounding proprioceptive input and a physical focus point.

Visual resources were prepared and visible as children entered the space, creating structure and supporting calm transitions. Every element was designed to be accessible, engaging and developmentally appropriate.

Wellbeing education should work for every child in the room.

Originally created bespoke for Herne Hill School’s Pre-Prep pupils, this workshop is now available for other schools to book as part of assemblies, PSHE lessons, Healthy Living Weeks or curriculum enrichment time.

When children leave not only engaged but calmer, more aware and able to articulate how healthy choices affect their bodies, we know that meaningful learning has taken place.
